Dear family and friends,

‘and lo, the star which they had seen in the east, went on before them, until it came and stood over where the Child was. And when they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.” Matthew 2:9-10

I am stirred once again by how these learned men, known for their studies of the sciences, were so taken by this star. The star had deep history and so anticipated significance for them. That it’s appearance was compelling for them to leave their home, risk the dangers and challenges of crossing many miles of varied terrains, villages and travelers, both inspires and challenges me. And when they finally saw the child, they bowed down and poured out from their hearts great gifts of joy. They fully embraced Emmanuel, “God with us.”

I love the Advent season of remembering what was, what is and what is still to come of God’s goodness for each of us, for everyone of us. For Bev and myself, it has been hard to not be present with you each Sunday. We could say we have been on a challenging journey across much new territory in our life. The dark of night has often felt darker and emptier than we have known. Yet, there has been the faithful star before us to continually remind and renew us that God is faithfully leading us to a deeper knowing of the peace and power of Jesus presence.

Bev is finding her way through the queasy, disturbing nausea, the draining tiredness and discouragement that accompanies this her third dose of chemo. Her bout of pneumonia is hanging on in a lesser degree, making rest still very important.

Your loving support, prayers of enduring hope, meals giving uplifting delight, gifts of such thoughtful kindness, and words of enduring friendship helps lift our eyes and hearts as to a star in the night that leads us to humbly bow before Jesus with gratefulness for the peace that He truly is with us. May you and I look with open eyes, hearts and seeking souls, welcoming the gifts of Christ’s presence in our midst this Advent season.

I thank God for the light of life in Jesus and you,

Pastor Dale
